HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL GROWTH is crucial to every Christian Life. By design, we are created to experience the most abundant life when we are growing in relationship with other people through shared experiences (fun, fellowship and service) and when we are also growing "upward" with in relationship with Jesus and the Father through discipleship. In a faith community the distinctions between horizontal & vertical are not always so cut and dried. For example, a Sunday morning worship service, as a shared experience, is focused on God (vertical), but involves our members gathering together (horizontal). Serving in our community, planned Bible Study, spontaneous parking lot prayer times, and yes, even board meetings all have this potential. So we try to plan events and ongoing ministries that meet the need for growth in both directions, through two key means - Fellowship and Discipleship (Life-Sharing & Life-long Learning).
PARTNERSHIP is one of the key ingredients of every church. It is as ancient as Adam and Eve. "It wasn't good for man to be alone" Eve was created to be Adam's partner in the work of caring for the earth and animals, but also to meet the basic need we all have for companionship linked with purpose.
Koinos means "common". The word koinonia is used frequently in the New Testament to describe the early church as a group which shared many things in common with one another. In scripture and in practice koinonia follows this priniciple - we grow in relationship when we share our lives with each other for a common mission (the advance of the Gospel). At Faith Church this happens through many different means (outreach events, small groups, meals, etc)
DISCIPLESHIP -- The greek word "mathetes" means student. Its the word Jesus used when he told his followers to "go and make disciples". He was saying train more learners. We believe that learning is one thing we do from day one and will continue to do for eternity. In fact growth is one of the essential signs of every kind of life.
Jesus' model shows us that we learn best in groups - most of his interactions were with different sized groups from three to twelve to the hundreds. So we value discipleship of many forms at Faith Church. We meet in groups for prayer, teaching, and worship. See our calendar for groups that exist now or our upcoming events pages for some groups that will be forming.
